If this is a real argument and not a straw-man argument, one more example: Gankutsuou. The Count of Monte Cristo is a space vampire.

Not to say it wasn't improved by the changes, I always thought the Count was a Karma Houdini as related to Mercedes.

I've seen proof that a Princess Di manga's being made. XD I don't appreciate the anime vs cartoon debates much, anyway. If you want to debate, do so on an individual show basis. Don't argue anime vs cartoons, argue Mononoke vs. Jungle Book, or something like that. =/

But yeah, if someone argues cartoons vs. anime, I'll basically assume that they're biased and uncultured and stereotyping both categories.

I've never read that argument, but if it's used...? Yeah, lame. The Japanese have a hell of a lot more fun bastardizing classic stories than American cartoons do. Hell, look how many takes on Journey To the West they've done. Dragon Ball, Saiyuki, InuYasha, etc... As long as the story is still fun and entertaining, I don't see why you can't enjoy both the original and the interpretation.

HoND is like my favourite movie ever. It means a lot to me, but yeah, it totally bastardizes the original. But also it was one of the biggest Disney box office flops with one of the strongest adult fanbases. It's a good movie either way.

Adding to the chorus of "I've never heard that one." which is strange, because as a fan of both, I've been in a lot of those arguements. I usually hear stuff like "Japanese animation is lazy." and "Western animation is only for children."

Too true. In anime most things involving Catholicism have little to do with the actual religion (even when it seems like they're trying).

And let's be honest-- Disney's The Little Mermaid is completely plagiarized from an anime version made in the 1970s anyway.

Truthfully, I think most of the time being super true to the original source isn't a huge concern for them anyway. It's not the point.

My only problem with Western animation is that I'm not the target audience. Sometimes I want something childish and fluffy and nostalgic (see 160 lol), but when I want more meat to my stories, I turn to anime. (shrug) It's the the Animation Age Ghetto at work.
