Could be that the actor had a bad reaction to contacts. There's also the possibility that it just didn't work on film. In the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy BBC series, apparently Ford's actor was done out with these really epic blue contact lenses - but they only really showed up during the tavern scene, due to the different kind of film used. Of course, that was back in the day and I should hope technology has improved somewhat by then...

Maybe they were just afraid of inevitably ending up with a scene here or there where they forgot to put his contacts in, or one got lost, or so forth...

Yeah but they couldn't be bothered to keep his scar on the right side of his face for several scenes, so why should the continuity of contacts bother them so much if they can't really keep one of his biggest focal points straight?
