I got the impression that her dream wasn't aimed at the same kind of art as the school she ended up at. Though she had done some graphic design before art college, she'd done a lot more traditional art. She might have thought the only feasible way to combine art and Dunder Mifflin would be through graphic design, but that doesn't mean she would necessarily enjoy it.

I agree that her dropping out was disapointing and a bit frustrating. I think redirecting her focus at the school would have been better, but it might not have been possible. And if it wasn't, dropping out would be better than spending time learning to do something she disliked.

That's true, but she had expressed interest in graphic design even before she went to art school in New York, as witnessed in the episode wherein the office workers at the Scranton branch made their own commercial, and Pam spends a significant amount of time and effort on the graphic that appears at the end of their commercial. Furthermore, she shows real pride in what's she done, which may either be a result of being satisfied with her graphic or happy that she actually produced something through effort (since her job is largely just answering phones, and it's seen elsewhere in the show that she's unsatisfied with such a job). So, I see what you're saying but I don't think it would have been unreasonable for Pam to have gone into graphic design given her past characterization in the show.
