Why do people feel like they need to totally divorce themselves from fandom in order to have a "real" life? As if you have to totally identify with one particular aspect of yourself instead of being multi-faceted. (I mean, I have a job that's totally unrelated to fandom in every way, and I can go to work and nobody knows I read manga or watch cartoons about giant robots. I can attend parties, talk about favorite albums, go to shows, attend a soccer game, and nobody else really knows about my "nerdy" interest. I'm completely satisfied with this. Why can't other people be? WHAT THE FUCK)

ETA: I just read this again and realized that the problem is the OP feels that her/his life is full of fail -- well, sorry if this seems harsh, but maybe your life wouldn't be full of fail if you put as much effort into it as you do your fandom? In this case I don't think escapism is doing you any favors.

This last paragraph is an interesting point, I think. Many people who feel they fail at life seem to have a problem with how much it takes to plan your life, meet friends, etc. Yet, these are the same people who spend hours creating icons or redesigning their livejournal skin.
I am not saying it is easy - being engaged in fandom is obviously more of an achievable goal for many people than shaping their real life, but fact is that everything takes practice and the only thing that can give anyone this kind of practice is to stop moaning and do something about the situation. Something that doesn't involve going online for a start (even if one decides to return, in moderation, afterwards).
So... essentially, I think for someone who is really absorbed the steps the OP initially took were fine. No one said it was easy.
