First of all, I think quitting fandom cold turkey is a really bad idea. If you find that it's sucking up so much of your time and energy that you can't maintain a healthy moderation and have to quit, then do it gradually.

As for the part about failing at everything you do outside of fandom... Well. We're in the same boat. When I tell people that I dislike my life, they say, "Why don't you change it? I saw you playing video games earlier. Why don't you do something productive?" And what I want to say is "This is the only thing that makes me happy anymore." I do think I have a pretty good balance between RL and fandom stuff, but while my RL isn't improving, the internet and my games are all that keeps me sane.

This might not be the same for everyone, but I actually find that the more I get involved in online stuff, discussions and so on, the more my real life sucks. And if something happens to pull me out, forces me to tear myself away from the screen, real life sucks initially, but gets worse after a time.
It's a bit like taking drugs is always displayed. First you have withdrawal symptoms (in the shape of missing your online contacts, which is the meanest form ever because it feels so real) but the practice - nothing but practice and patience outside the online world then makes me come back to life. Somehow.
