I haven't read the book, so maybe it's not really my place to butt in here, but: from the description given in this thread, it sounds like exactly the kind of story I would have loved the crap out of back when I was an idiot fourteen year old girl. Anything that was complicated or dark or seemed "adult" and gritty, I ate that melodramatic nonsense up with a spoon.

But then I sort of grew out of it. It's just that there's enough sad, pointless, unhappily-ended nonsense that goes on IRL, you know? I like it when a work of fiction can stay at least somewhat positive, since in reality happy endings are so hard to come by.

It's not *hey look at me i'm an ADULT novel OMG.* It's just more complex, not ~Complicated~ like an Avril Lavigne song. It's something you can't just boil down to black and white.

And you're right, you should read the book before you pass judgement, since most of the people hear seem to hate it. I fail to see how Bella, with something inside that literally kills her, is different from Clare repeatedly trying to get pregnant despite miscarriages.

It may be pointless to a degree, but everything is. You want books for an escape; I liked it because, instead all that wishy-washy everything happens for a reason and will be alright romantic business, it's not clean, it's not happy, and there are shades of grey.

I mean, I like the happy stuff once in a while too, but sometimes it's nice to empathize with the sad stuff too.
