I kinda feel like this is the side effect of big companies wanting to make media that has the broadest appeal possible in terms of viewership. That's great for their bottom line, but maybe not so great for overall quality or artistic value.

lmaooo this reminds me of my teenage stint in yu gi oh fandom and how many fics had the various body sharing characters get their own bodies (that still looked just like the original) with zero explanation. I was also guilty of doing this and I still don't really know why we did it. Convenience I guess.

I'm with you, OP. I'm so tired of edgy drug lords or dystopic apocalyptic Sci Fi. I keep hoping media makers will realize we want some positive escape from the doomed dystopia we're already living in but they don't seem to get it.

Eh, it's not like there's any shortage of sexy body-sharing fic. There's a lot of fun possibilities (storywise and pornwise) that are specific to either way, of course you're going to get authors who do both, depending on what works for the story they're doing at that moment.

Agreed on the bafflement about "they were always separate totally-unrelated people" fics, though. It's one thing if the split happens after they came into existence as a system -- that works as well as any other fic about some New Weird Magic Nonsense they have to deal with. But if you rewrite their whole backstories...? That wipes out a ton of the history and interaction that makes their relationship(s) so compelling in the first place.
