I kinda feel like this is the side effect of big companies wanting to make media that has the broadest appeal possible in terms of viewership. That's great for their bottom line, but maybe not so great for overall quality or artistic value.

I'm with you, OP. I'm so tired of edgy drug lords or dystopic apocalyptic Sci Fi. I keep hoping media makers will realize we want some positive escape from the doomed dystopia we're already living in but they don't seem to get it.

I'm not much of a movie watcher so I unfortunately don't have any recs there. I've watched a few good shows that fit this bill recently.

The thing that bugs me, has always bugged me, will continue to bug me, is when the portrayal of consensual sex in a show about adults in adult relationships, is treated by some people as more extreme and higher-rated and worse to watch than bloody gory violence.

Or the idea that sex scenes that are highly revealing of character/relationship dynamics aren't important and they should be skippable if they have to be written at all. That a sex scene, even a PG-13 veiled one, has no important storytelling value and a creator has to jump over crazy hoops to justify including it.

I mean, sex is a normal part of lots of peoples' lives. It's not something shut away in a separate category from their job and their friends and family and the world-saving/mystery-solving/pirate-ship-running/espionage or whatever the characters in your show do. It's a legitimate part of their story, and it's really emotionally resonant and very expressive of character if you do it right.

I know! Sex isn't even really big part of my life, but it's a normal thing for people and it's a normal thing to show. I understand that some actors can be uncomfortable with playing in explicit scenes, but people being scandalized by PG-13 stuff is just frustrating
