Honestly, I would much rather a book knows its genre and stays there rather than promising conflict and adventure only to go fluffy and everything just works out.

This, if you went in being told it was fluffy slice-of-life and got disappointed that it was not an Epic Adventure... I don't know what to tell you.

It's fully okay like the anon above to not WANT to read fluffy slice-of-life, but to be disappointed that it is what it said on the tin seems weird.

da but being slice-of-life isn't an excuse for having no sort of conflict or character development whatsoever, though? If there's zero conflict or character development that's just plain bad writing, period.

Fluff can still have character development, though? Even the Smurfs get character growth sometimes. Well, the ones with names anyway.

Seconding what the two anons above me are saying. You can tell a fluffy story and still incorporate the basic elements of strong storytelling. What makes a story compelling and well-executed isn't actually the size (height?) of the stakes.
