It was originally planned as 5 seasons and after that arc wrapped up they clearly didn't know what to do. They had to keep raising the stakes somehow but there aren't many places you can go after stopping the literal apocalypse without jumping the shark. So the writing just objectively got worse and worse from season 6 onwards. Imo, season 6's only saving grace was Balthazar.

I stopped caring after season 5, and finally fell off completely somewhere in 7, so I am here to second that Balthazar's episodes were the only enjoyable or memorable thing about season 6.
