Same, OP. I don't really like "Anne with an E"'s approach in the first place, but mostly it's that the miniseries was so defining for me that I can't imagine anyone else playing those parts. It's just not the same.

I didn't see the miniseries until I was an adult and that doesn't stop me hating Anne with an E. Such a disservice to great source material. I actually think the only thing it got right was the casting, visually speaking. And the scenery. If it was a cosplay photoshoot I would be all over it, it's just that they open their mouths and start saying so much wrong.

I like Anne With An E a lot, and could take or leave the miniseries, but I can still understand having a favorite adaptation that defines a story and its characters for you, and it doesn't surprise me that the miniseries is that for a lot of people.

Anne with an E had such contempt for the source material that I'm surprised and happy if it got anyone to check it out. (I don't think all adaptations that are updated to match more modern attitudes are contemptuous, but this one obviously saw itself as a "fixed" version of the original.)

Actually Anne with an E is one of my favorite shows, and I particularly loved their casting.

That being said, I wouldn't say that it showed contempt for the original. I think it knew people who wanted a faithful adaption already had the mini-series and other movies, and they wanted to do something that would address modern things. I highly rec the show, but I always warn people that the plot is vastly different.

I got into the first season, and the second season just resonated with me for multiple reasons. I actually don't mind they wrapped it up with series 3, because they were beginning to let plot drive the story instead of the characters. (Like, I agreed with the messages, but the free-speech plot line was so anachronistic, and the Josie Pye storyline was botched when it could have been much effective if done differently).

I love them both. I really enjoyed the interpretation of the material of Anne with an E.
