I think it knew people who wanted a faithful adaption already had the mini-series and other movies, and they wanted to do something that would address modern things. I highly rec the show, but I always warn people that the plot is vastly different.
I got into the first season, and the second season just resonated with me for multiple reasons. I actually don't mind they wrapped it up with series 3, because they were beginning to let plot drive the story instead of the characters. (Like, I agreed with the messages, but the free-speech plot line was so anachronistic, and the Josie Pye storyline was botched when it could have been much effective if done differently).
