I hope I didn't crush your enthusiasm too badly. :(

You could try to check Amazon and similar sites for self-published books of your genre and take a look at the covers there. See what other people do with their covers, and what kind of covers would make you buy or pass on a book. Maybe in self-publishing, people like self-made covers?
