I have an acquaintance who is from Europe and living here in the US temporarily for work and all her braggy, smug "I'm so glad things aren't like this in MY country" posts on social media today are really getting on my nerves. She's also from an incredibly privileged, sheltered background and sometimes makes comments that are just...mind-bogglingly tone deaf. In the past I've tried to give her the benefit of the doubt because I thought she was just ignorant and didn't actually have bad intentions but after today she's just pissing me off. I probably should just block her at this point.

Ugh, I hate people like that, honestly. I would definitely block her myself, but I understand that can be more complicated to do with an acquaintance than a stranger. Still, I would definitely say this behavior today is block-worthy.

I am heartened by the people around the world expressing shock and sympathy, to say nothing of people in states where things aren't so bad gladly offering room and help for those who need it. It is possible to live in a privileged country where things aren't complete shit and express understanding of said privilege without making things worse. I've seen plenty of people being very good about it. Said friend of yours is not good, so dump without any regret.

I would love it if people in other countries who have it much better could communicate it to Americans in a way that makes even the dumbest red-stater go "heyyyy....we could have it just as good here as they do there!" but I also don't blame ya'll for washing your hands of our bullshit. If I could move to Canada or Sweden or literally anywhere else, I would. But I don't blame people in other countries for our inability to manage anything.
