(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 07:09 am (UTC)(link)Emotional kink is a really good way of putting it. I definitely have an emotional kink for "we shouldn't, we really really shouldn't (and indeed they REALLY SHOUlDN'T, it's not a tee-hee thing) but we just cannot resist this overwhelming desire." I like it in infidelity, I like it in enemies-to-lovers, I like it in teacher/student and employer/employee and some kinds of incest, like siblings who met as adults, etc. The kink is specifically a desire strong enough to overcome a taboo. And yeah, I love it when the relationship is messy as hell but they get what they consider to be a happy ending.
It's cathartic. And various types of Forbidden Love have been popular as long as love stories of any kind have been popular. This kind of catharsis - playing with taboo fantasies in a safe and harmless way - is one of the things fiction is really good at.

EXACTLY. Which, for me, is why it has to be both intensely sexual and based in a really deep connection. If it's just sexual desire, it feels impulsive and meaningless to me. Like, the taboo can't really be that strong if just wanting to get a leg over was enough to overcome it. But when they would jump in front of bullets for each other without a second's hesitation, and also they desperately want to fuck each other, then it's like, now we're talking. The taboo is strong, but what they feel for each other is stronger.
Plus I just love (LOVE) fics where the tension increases after the characters start having sex. One of my deepest frustrations with fanfic, for years, was the way the tension almost always evaporates once the characters get together. It took me a stupidly long time to realize that if I got into OTPs where something made the relationship taboo, then the tension could just increase.
