I'm not caught up, but Damian getting a surprise crush on Anya was so adorable. I'll probably ship them too, OP. Fans genuinely have weird ideas about how ships work, some of your friends could actually assume shipping means sex, but another motive is probably fear that Anya/Damian will take away popularity from Yor/Loid so they're trying to stop that by inventing ways to make it immoral to ship. It's the millionth verse same as the first.

I'd say find less uptight friends. I had an ex friend who shot down my idea for an adult aimed cartoon thing bc it involved high schoolers and "they're minors you can't make an adult cartoon about minors" "listen I don't mean it's all like sexual and shit , the humor is just more -"THEY'RE MINORS THO"

You just can't talk to people like that .

It's come to where I don't think it should be correct to call characters "minors." Minor is a legal status that exists to give and restrict certain rights. But characters don't have rights. Characters should only be called minors if it's by other characters inside of the story, not when fandom is discussing them as characters.

I think part of the reason they do this is because of how it sounds to outsiders. They can make someone talking about something that's actually really not a big deal sound really bad to casual people listening. Which is what they want. They use appeal to emotion to get people on their side. Honestly it's really similar to how conservatives shriek about "grooming" and stuff that sounds alarming.

Did you see that person on Tumblr who accused a Tumblr staff member of being a pedophile fascist for, among other fandom sins, shipping this? The accuser’s blog got nuked so fast . . .

"shipping isn't inherently sexual" -- i feel like this used to be, if not universally, then at least more widely understood. i just don't talk about my "friend"ships anymore.

When did that attitude become a thing, anyway? Like as far back as I can remember, people have shipped child characters in a "I want them to hold hands and get ice cream together" age-appropriate puppy love sort of way.

I always understood shipping as romantic. Not necessarily sexual, but not friendship. It was never a big thing to say you "shipped" characters if you liked their friendship but didn't like them as a couple. The word "shipping" came from people in the X-Files fandom wanting a relationship that was platonic in canon to become a romance.

I actually started watching this when art of these two aged up was everywhere on Twitter thinking there was a time skip. I felt so bamboozled, LOL!

At least there's a fair bit of content to enjoy. Sucks that your friends are a buzzkill, but there's comfort in knowing there's a number of people out there that do enjoy and make content of these two.

people so fucking weird about shipping nowadays, it just used to mean 'i like these two characters together', not necessarily fucking

(Anonymous) 2022-07-05 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Your friends are definitely in the minority because it seems everyone ships them. They are definitely the most interesting ship potential considering them becoming friends is a huge plot point. Meanwhile Yor and Loid are just Anya's platonic babysitters rather than a ship.
