I once tried to explain to an author that everything you pay for results in something you didn’t pay for. I didn’t buy or read his books, and I spent the money to eat out. If I bought his books and he had more money, the restaurant would have less money and might even close down. So the real issue is with the government for not instituting basic income that would allow the restaurant workers to survive even if they lost their jobs. “Authors deserve to be paid for their work” still buys into the idea that the work is what determines whether you should be allowed to survive.

He blocked me, of course.

“He blocked me, of course.”

Well yeah.

I, also, would block this person.

Me too. How patronising and pretentious can you get?

"I tried to explain to him that it's capitalism's fault that I don't care if he gets money to live currently in the world we have, can you believe he blocked me?"

I care if he gets money. I don’t care MORE about him getting money than unemployed or severely disabled people getting money, and I think it’s dangerous to link survival necessities to labor.

Cool--give the spiel to your local representatives or hell, fellow consumers instead of to the people suffering under the system.

It's ironic that you compared his pay to a restaurant worker's, given that it's remarkably similar to "I'm not tipping because I don't think tipping should be a thing, and I think it's okay if the waiter gets shafted for my moral statement rather than ensuring the waiter's pay and raising my complaints with the manager/owner instead."

But I didn’t read his books. There’s nothing to fucking tip. And if you didn’t read or buy his books, you’ve done exactly as much harm to him as someone who pirated them.

Missing the point.

You said "'Authors deserve to be paid for their work' still buys into the idea that the work is what determines whether you should be allowed to survive" to someone who, presumably, is also working to survive.

"X deserves to be paid for their work" and "X shouldn't have to work to survive" ARE two different concepts, but complaining that someone who IS working to survive is upset that they're not getting the money to survive doesn't make you the moral winner here. It means you're not bitching to the right end of the stick.
