(Anonymous) 2022-06-30 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)We're really getting to the point now where yelling "Well, I'm not American!" doesn't work as a bulletproof excuse anymore. So all this grandstanding about piracy is much less convincing. You might as well be honest that you do it because that's what you prefer to do.
As a non-American living in a developing country, I'm actually a bit offended that you tried to paint us all with this brush.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-01 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)I did not paint all non-American living outside USA with all the same brush. I did it with Americans living in the USA, saying they all should check their priviledge.
You can be offended by what I say, but IMHO you're offended on the wrong point. Not everyone is like you as not everyone is like me. I'm priviledged as hell so I don't presume to talk about any other person BUT ME. Which is why what I wrote as an example is a very personal thing.
I was just pointing out that there are other realities outise the American/West- Eurocentric mindset and we should respect that. Piracy is also about accessibility.
Also, yes, I pirate because I like it. I did say it. I have no qualms about it.
I built almost my entire educational and working career on stuff that I pirated. I learned English and other 2 languages because I could pirate and watch/read stuff for free.
For me PERSONALLY piracy is good. And overrall it is not morally bad. It's neutral.
Now that I'm above the poverty line I pay for most of the stuff I consume. I will never pay Disney or EA a fucking dime (and that too is illegal and bad but IDGAF), but I spend my money on indie games regularly and sometimes indie books, too. (I honestly prefer reading published non-fiction books or fanfictions).
You know why I pay for indie games? Because in the past I fall in love with them when all I could play with my very old computer where pirated indie games. I doubt I'd ever fall in love with those games with I never ever pirated because it was "the morally bad thing to do".
Overall IN MY PERSONAL CASE the indie industry benefitted from me pirating.
And if you talk to pirates, most of the people they are like me. Some of them are teenagers that have no money or want to do something illegal for the thrill of it. A lot of them don't give a fuck altoghether because they can. I respect any of them and don't judge them because I really don't give a fuck about a crime that has no real victim.
Also, buying stuff from amazon is hardly the high moral standing that you think it is LMAO I MEAN, IT'S FUCKING AMAZON.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-02 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)But you saying that [You attempted to speak for everyone who’s non-American] is just disingenuos. I did say MY PERSONAL reality. I pointed out that there are realities outside the mainsteam USA/West-Europe mentality that there is Amazon, Libby and Netflix and Spotify everywhere.
For a very visible example: Just fucking think about Russian people now! All major corporations pulled out of Russia because of the war. How else are russian people going to access some major media without piracy? Is it OK for them never to access the media that they love and anticipated for years just because their governement is VERY corrupted and againts its own people. I personally don't think it is.
Or IDK think of China, India, Indonesia, a lot of countries from the Middle East, etc. Piracy help the people there gaining stuff that their country deems immoral and illegal. It's essential that people with access to those media pirate and share it on the web so everyone can access them.
There are certainly people that can access everything legally from those countries, but a lot of people around the world can't. We have to recognize it.
Also, I come from a "Westen" European country. I've know poverty, I've know misogyny, homophobia, ethnical discrimination on myself. I know that not everyone in the USA and Western Europe are priviledge in the broad sense, but in the sense of digital availability? HELL YEAH, WE ARE. (I still don't have Libby access though. I KNOW BECAUSE I TRIED)
It's rare to find someone without any internet access nowadays (there are free internet access points in a lot of the major cities and even small towns), rarer than someone who can't pay their rent and bills, at least around me (again, PERSONAL EXPERIENCE). And also almost every country in that sphere have access to the majority or media corporation on internet. Is it only there? OF COURSE NOT. Australia and Japan are other two example of country with ubiquitos access to internet and streaming services.
I did say something fucking hurtful which is that "American should check their priviledge" as a provocation, which I know is a very silly thing to do because the USA is a wide country with a LOT of discrimination and social injustice going on, but I did not pretend to speak for EVERYONE who's not American.
I'm a pirate, always will advocate for piracy. That makes me a bad person in the eyes of the vast majority of people, surely. I'm a bad person also because I stole physical goods to survive when I was younger and because I stole again when I had an addiction when I was a little bit older, too. If there is hell/paradise I will SURELY and gladly go to hell.
I'm not a good person, never will be and I did some really fucked up things in my life. Some in other to survive, some because I didn't know better, some because I didn't really give a fuck.
I don't have to "justify piracy" to feel better about myself. I'm a shit person anyway. But I will forever defend it because I KNOW that not everyone has the same regional and monetary access to mainstream enterntainment and I truly think that we should not morally judge everyone that pirates because piracy is also about accessibility.
You can say it's illegal because hell yeah it is. But to say it's always BAD and [there is no good reason for pirating unless you really can’t get anything in your country without it. Which isn’t remotely the case anymore. There isn’t a good reason to do it] is just plain wrong and comes from a priviledged point of view.
(Doubt anyone will read this. I wrote this because IDK maybe it'll help me argument this thing more effectively. Also... English practise? Doubt anyone will change their moral standing about piracy because of what I say, but fuck it. I wasted 20 minutes of my life but I don't really have anything better to do on a Saturday afternoon anyway LMAO)
