I would be interested to hear Brits opinions on this, as I've not read her work. I'm afraid OP that coming from an American, that your verdict means nothing and you're probably right about HP fic informing your opinion.

Likely. I used to privately alternately lol or smh at American fans talking earnestly about authenticity when the work in question was anything but.
Privately because the one time I questioned something I was angrily told not to be a colonialist and that they had Irish and English ancestors so knew perfectly well what went on in Britain, and I was just wrong, even though they had never visited and I've lived here all my 40+ years of life.
I kid you not.

Yeah I once made the mistake of pointing out something similar and got blasted for it. It's crazy how much they think they 'know' about the UK when they haven't got a decking clue.

It was very odd. Something about pubs that you honestly wouldn't know without going to a lot of them.

As an American, I have no clue why anyone does this. How someone could be so confidently uninformed. I don’t even think I’d feel like I would accurately represent somewhere I’d lived most of my life, much less think I could somehow capture what it’s like in a country I’ve never been to before!

(Anonymous) 2022-07-04 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's a very very common attitude from Americans when it comes to the UK and also Ireland.

MTE
I’m curious to read it and form my own opinion. As someone who’s lived half and half each side of the pond and reads a mix of American and British lit, it all just kinda melds together in my mind. I think I’d probably view it as very authentic like OP unless there are some glaring issues with phrasing.

I, on the other hand, still remember when my American friend got her RP character chewed out by a British person for not sounding British (it was from a manga set in Britain with no official English translation) when the person's only motive was to get her kicked out of the RP because she hated the character. Other British people said she sounded fine in private chats where neither person was in, but they were too afraid to say it to the girl's face, because she was a talented writer and very popular. After that, I'm doubtful of anyone telling Americans who consume British media that they don't know what Brits sound like. It's a good chance they're self-serving lies.

What a load of bull. That kind of infighting is common in RPs and the other Brits stood up for them. This is clearly something completely different.

One example where it was obvious what the motive was proves zilch. I guess you just wanted some confirmation bias so you could ignore criticism.

One instance = a good chance of any future events being the same? Yeah, you need a better education in basic statistics.
Or a good look in the mirror, because your bias is showing.

I'll never forget when the author of Outlander visited a cafe near us (we're in Scotland). She asked my mate what she thought of Outlander (not mentioning who she was), and was extremely put out when my mate told her it was a load of sentimental American bollocks lol.
