Definitely not just Americans making errors, but Americans are the only ones who get shitty about it when it's pointed out.

This. It’s pretty ignorant in and of itself to say “only Americans do this very common thing”, as if America is the only place where people get shitty and defensive instead of admitting mistakes. America has some real assholes, and they make the stereotypes that Americans are worse about this kind of thing seem true. But they’re still just stereotypes a majority of the time. And painting all Americans with the same brush is silly, as is having no awareness that certain behaviors are not actually something “only Americans do”.
