I read a published book by a British author set in California that used more British words and concepts (the characters had "afternoon tea" for crying out loud) than most books by British authors set in the UK. No fanfic will ever top that. I have to think the writer did it on purpose to see if she could get away with it.

I mean... I can absolutely see some artsy Britaboo character doing this (you know, some sort of dreamy literature student/bookstore owner or something along those tropes) but just from what ayrt wrote, it doesn't sound like it.
