*that's how you GET more unfavorable reactions

This is what I get for posting replies before I've had my coffee.

Nayrt

Because you said you were done with Americans as a whole while using very specific and isolated examples of things some Americans have done. Nobody likes being generalized or lumped in with the worst or dumbest people that actually only make up a vocal minority of the group they’re a part of. And your reaction to your dollar example feels like a pretty big overreaction to a dumb mistake. Either way, ayrt said “that’s how you get more unfavorable reactions”, so they specifically already accounted for the fact that you were already getting unfavorable reactions, that’s why the said “MORE unfavorable reactions”.

This dollar thing is a stupid mistake in a really popular fanfic that was the last straw for me who was trying to find something readable. And my frustration and venting is a result of all the fucking YEARS of Americans inserting themselves in every fandom, in every conversarion. Demanding to know their slang, their politics, their pop-culture, their every nuance, every piece of news. And not having a grace to do the same in return. At least to the country they share history and language with.
I am perfectly aware that everyone is not the same and there are a lot of different people, including US people. But I am going to generalize on an anonymous forum, because I am tired and frustrated and I wanted to vent about this stupid thing. You somehow hold an illusion that I care A LOT about being likeable and non-confrontational.

“You somehow hold an illusion that I care A LOT about being likeable and non-confrontational.”

I definitely don’t. I was explaining to you why you got the reaction you did, because you were unaware, as evidenced by starting the comment I was replying to with “Somehow I've got unfavorable reaction BEFORE writing about being defensive though. So whatever, man“. You’re the one that seems like you’re being very defensive, but you accused someone else of being defensive after they basically only posted “It’s not all Americans though”.

And “inserting themselves in every fandom, in every conversation”? The conversation thing I get, some Americans are jackasses, same with “their slang, their politics, their pop-culture, their every nuance, every piece of news“. But the internet is as open as this forum, so they’re not “inserting themselves” in fandoms, they’re participating in them the same as you are. You probably don’t even know some people you fandom with are American, because they don’t all act like that. Which you have admitted to, but then proceeded to say “I know they’re not all the same, but I’m going to generalize anyways”. If you admitted they’re not all the same, then that’s different from generalizing at that point, regardless of whether you also admitted that you were generalizing to start with. And I don’t live in your head, or live your life, and neither does anyone else but you, so people won’t always react the way you want them to when you explain your thoughts to them. Some people might be very similar and get your feelings. And some people may think this dollars mistake is a ridiculous thing to be a last straw, and not think it’s that bad at all. Especially because British slang does show up plenty in fics taking place in America, and it maybe not being as frequent as the reverse doesn’t mean it’s something you should brush off if keeping slang correct for the fandom and location is that important to you.

It also seems like you care a little what people think if you react like this when the reception to your comments isn’t completely positive. But I’m willing to believe it’s just how it can read, and not how you’re actually feeling, same with me saying you seem like you’re being defensive, which is why I said you can ‘seem’ that way to me or others. I don’t know you and can’t see your actual reactions, so it’s all trying to read tone over text, which isn’t practical or reliable.

And this is completely untrue for Americans as a whole: “And not having a grace to do the same in return. At least to the country they share history and language with.”. That’s another generalization based on the actions of a vocal minority. I don’t care for generalizations of any country or it’s people, so I don’t get why some people are so quick with them. They see some people they can’t stand that belong to the same country, and even in passing saying “I’m so done with (country and it’s citizens)!”. Americans seem to be very commonly just expected to take it, but again, people don’t like being generalized. Especially based on just living in the same country as others who should be the actual singular targets of anger. People don’t like being lumped in with the worst and/or most annoying people they share a country with.

The UK itself is another frequent target of generalizations, like people not being able to defend themselves against it sometimes without getting a “shut up colonizer”. And that thread a few weeks back asking if people in the UK would just assume they won Eurovision just because it was being hosted in the UK, that was a weird example that felt like a generalization based on some stereotypes. It was called out and questioned by several people, but it’s a similar type of offhand generalization that I’m talking about not getting why people feel the need to do it. Russian citizens are also a target of being generalized, with a lot of people(and one specific anon here) lumping in everyone who just lives there with Putin sympathizers and the military. So I’m not trying to say America has this special double standard against it where people can say whatever they want against it and Americans aren’t allowed to fight back, while it’s against some rule to do so to other countries. I’ve seen some far right assholes in America say just that, usually while proceeding to insult other countries freely, and not seeing how that renders what they just said wrong. Those people don’t speak for all Americans, and the people who generalize Americans don’t speak for everyone in the country they live in.

TL;DR:

I just don’t like generalizing everyone who simply lives in a country by lumping them in with vocal minorities. But I’m not trying to stop you, just explaining to you why you got the reaction you did. You’re allowed to say whatever you want, and people are allowed to react to what you said however they want.
