Just blasting away is definitely a shitty way to handle the situation and made everything worse, but I feel like Triton acted more out of fear than a need to control Ariel. From his point of view he basically stumbled onto his daughter's hoard of nazi paraphernalia. He genuinely believed humans were evil and that admiration of them was dangerous.
