I remember liking this story as a kid but I don't remember anything except MENSTRUATION.

I remember the girls doing some dance to increase their busts.

WE MUST

WE MUST INCREASE OUR BUSTS

Makes me want to re-read the book. Would prob take me like half an hour.

I was so afraid of the belt with hooks for the pad.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-07 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto. I remember asking my mom what sanitary belts were and feeling so relieved when she told me people didn’t use those anymore.

They were extremely annoying. Count yourself lucky that you never had to use them.

I could never get behind this book, because of the characters' obsession with menstruation. Was there anyone, anyone who was that keyed up at the prospect of their first period?

Me, when I got mine, I just remember going, "Oh God, I'm not ready for this." I was not excited in the slightest.

I hated that book too and I don't even remember much about why. I think it was something about the way things ended between her and her friends where I thought the book was trying to make her friends look bad when in my opinion Margaret was the bad friend. I don't remember what happened to make me decide that, though.

I haven't read that book in so long maybe I don't remember it right but I thought I remembered all four of them being crummy friends.

DA I remember them being competitive about their periods and one of the girls lying about getting hers because no one wanted to be the last one to get their period. None of them were very supportive either.

I do remember them being kind of bitchy with eachother about weight, slut shaming and some other stuff

Honestly, I don't remember much about that book. It didn't stick with me.

But looking at that cover, man, I love that style of covers. They were so good and it was so fun to play 'spot the scene!' as I read the book. (Babysitters club and a couple other series also had this style of cover. I miss it.)

(Anonymous) 2022-07-07 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I loved that cover style too!
cakemage: (It's serious business.)

Agreed!

(Anonymous) 2022-07-07 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I never read this but I didn't like coming of age stories, either. I couldn't find any I identified with.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-07 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
yep, same with art house.
cakemage: (Bitch please)

Late to the party and maybe a little TMI, but...

I remember hating this book as a kid, too. I got my first period at age 9 and had almost definitely developed endometriosis (it runs in the family) by age 12, which is when I read this book. I just could not relate at all to those girls' obsession with getting their periods, when mine were already so debilitating that I could hardly walk for 5 days out of each month. Also, Margaret and her friends were all kind of horrible to each other and everyone else.

OP

Thank you to the secret maker for making my secret! 🙂
