How is Metatron more hated than Lucifer?

I wasn’t really in the fandom, but I feel like Lucifer was a character people “love to hate” and that he was mostly seen as an enjoyable villain. Whereas people seemed to dislike Metatron being in the story.

This. I stopped watching before Metatron. But Lucifer was an interesting, complex villain. A villain can be fun to watch and not hated because they are a good character.

Lucifer was a fun character. At least when played by the original guy or Misha Collins (hated Padelecki Lucifer). Metatron was just annoying.

For me... I dislike Lucifer's actor, and I like Metatron's actor-- I think he's good at playing slimy and hard-to-like, but he comes across as a nice, down-to-earth person in real life, whereas I keep hearing things that make Mark P. really difficult to enjoy, even if he does a good job at the role.

Ditto, I really liked Metatron as a villain, especially in his big showdown and then when he talked Chuck into fighting the Darkness.

Lucifer just annoyed the ever-loving fuck out of me. So slimy. I guess he was okay as Rick Springfield or whatever but the main actor that played him really squicked me.

I'll be real honest with you here, I think when people rank which villains they enjoy watching vs which villains they don't want to see, beauty standards comes into it, because when it comes to tormenting the main characters... Metatron's not worse than Lucifer. He's not less entertaining, either-- he's got snarky back-and-forths with Cas that are no less funny than Lucifer. But Curtis Armstrong is a heavier-set character actor and a lot of people don't interrogate their biases.

which is not to say I think everyone who enjoys Lucifer thinks of him as hot-- just that he conforms more to the standard, and that's the thing about having a subconscious bias.
