As someone who doesn't know 'Doylist' and 'Watsonian' from a hole in the ground...it didn't bother me a bit. I didn't feel it was any weirder than someone who could see ghosts or have tentacles coming out of their stomach.

And I think sure, it was a little wish-fulfilling to have his family immediately be perfectly okay/never deadname/etc., but I'm here for that, too, in a show where someone can live on the moon for four years.

Right? These are kids who spent a good portion of their life with numbers as names. They are not phased by someone coming out as trans and wanting to go by a different name.

This, too - They seemingly choose their own names over numbers (except for Five, and I wish I knew that story!), so choosing another name that everyone is so easy with isn't too out there, just not most transitioning people's actual experience, I'm sure.

But frankly, it's nice to have some stories like that, 'real' or not.

As someone who's seen too much media where gay people are bullied or beat up or die of AIDS, I freaking loved 'Vanya is Viktor now, moving on.' Reality can be so bleak, and in a show where the entire existence of the world is on the line, acceptance worked for me.

THIS. The whole world is crazy. Vanya becoming Viktor is one of the least absurd things to happen to the UA.

This! I try for that in the fan-fic i read, too; just really enough angst and hate in the 'real' world - I want my entertainment to be a bit more lighthearted.

and honestly it's not that unrealistic either. in my experience so many people just have their own shit to deal with and can't be bothered to have an opinion about it
