(Anonymous) 2022-07-07 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)You know you’re acting in bad faith when you try to play the numbers game to act like having more people makes you more important. It shouldn’t be an either/or. We should have strong female characters and trans rep. But there’s still a good amount of strong female characters that people can look to, even if should always be more. Whereas there’s a very small amount of representation for trans people, much less good representation. I feel like Viktor is good representation for trans men that I would have felt happy to see when I was younger, I would have felt seen. But you’re just stuck in the fact that you feel like representation was “taken away from you”, instead of considering the representation Viktor provides is still important to people and can be considered relatable to cis women too. Because you don’t have to have the same gender identity as a character to relate to them or feel empowered by them. Lord knows trans people already know that, considering the lack of trans rep means that we’ve had no choice but to relate to mostly cis characters. Representation is still important even if you can relate to people of a different gender identity, sexuality, race, or ethnicity though, because it can help people, especially younger people know that there’s nothing wrong with them. That it’s more than fine to be who they are, and that they matter just as much as anyone else. Normalizing being LGBTQ+, or other things like being neurodivergent or disabled, can make a difference to people, and can even save lives. And is just as important as having strong female characters. Making this about who makes up more of the population is an incredibly bad take. Unless you really do think minorities of any kind are less important than the majority. I’m going to assume that’s not what you mean, you’re not intending to sound prejudiced, but it can definitely sound that way if you word things like that.
