One of the images from 9/11 that struck me hardest was the scene of hundreds of women's shoes lying in the dust covered street. They were all impractical shoes, bought with the idea of looking snazzy for work, and on any other day they would have been fine. But on that one morning, fashion lost meaning, and all those 200 dollar shoes were left in the street, while their owners ran barefoot to safety.
