1) My story concept was too "done." It wasn't that I didn't write as well as usual, it's just that I wasn't writing anything new about my pairing.
2) My story concept was too weird, but not quite weird enough: I was writing a pairing that no one at that moment had any interest in, or my scenerio was a bit too icky or off putting. And yet it wasn't quite bizarre enough to be a train wreck.
3) My timing was bad. Everyone was away at a con, or my fandom was in the process of dying or I posted to a fast moving community right at the point that something else more interesting was going on.
4) I misunderstood my audience and committed an unforgivable sin. I've done this a couple of times to my great embarrassment. I wrote a pairing fic that inadvertently insulted the pairing I was writing, or I wrote a kink in a way that turned off/annoyed the people who enjoyed the kink.
5) My fic dragged. Sometimes details that I thought were subtle, poignant and realistic didn't come off that way to anyone but me. To everyone else they were boring.
