Honestly, I get how she feels. I'm on the older end of doing fandom stuff and sometimes, the overall internet does feel like a young person's lobby. It's gotten to a point where I've crawled into my cave and only distribute my stuff from there. I'm not particularly saying it's a bad thing - much more calming, and I do have really close, old friends who are there for me and vice versa, so I'm fairly content - but it's a damn shame that getting your shit out there more and more means people will find a way to police the way you fandom that feels very, well, conservative.

This is so fandom-dependent, though. I feel sorry for the people who are into something with a lot of screaming puritan teenagers on the attack. I'm over 40, still in fandom, and still enjoying it, but I have to carefully choose my fandom interaction.

But it sounds like you're hinting that her husband is pressuring her to not have this hobby so he sucks. I bet she's not allowed to have other hobbies either.

I'm in my mid-forties and enjoying fandom more than ever! Yes, most of my fandom friends are around half my age (and online), but I am so comfortable with them because no one I know my age shares my interests. It's pretty much always been this way for me though, so without the internet I don't know what I would have done.

After hanging out with some workmates recently, I was kind of shocked to realise that online fandom spaces are my safe-zone. The people there understand me way more than the ones I spend most of my time with.
