I've tried to do secret one once or twice, but the text-to-speech programs I use all have monotonous voices, and I can't stand to listen to them for more than a few minutes at a time.

I blame Audible because ever since I started using it, I've become a narrator snob, and noped out of so many audiobooks because I thought the narrator had a boring voice or was a terrible performer.

I started paying attention to narration over the pandemic when I started listening to audiobooks! I feel very much the same way -- if I don't like the voice acting or the voice itself, I guess I'm just going to have to read it!

That said, I've now found a few favorite narrators that I will happily listen to read manuals all day.

Same! Have Jefferson Mays or Bronson Pinchot as the narrator of your book, and I don't need to listen to the sample. I'm in!
