I love this one character but nobody I know even in the fandom wants to read the filth I write because nobody else likes him. It's the worst.

If you don't drive them out, then sooner or later they'll turn around and work to drive you out. See current Bond fandom for examples of that, and Star Trek Discovery too. The BNFs loathe that there are older fans in the fandom and actively seek to drive them out. Or just look at how FS has systematically purged everyone who liked the livejournal days too. I wish we had done more gatekeeping back then.

The Paramount+ roll out has been one of the most epic self-inflicted clusterfucks in the modern entertainment history. If it is wasn't for Netflix actively killing one of its own USPs, and turning people off, then P+ would have been DOA. P+ was saved from its incompetence by Nfx's incompetence.

I think a little bit of gatekeeping can be beneficial, but unfortunately I do not think there is any way to implement a little bit of gatekeeping that does not involve being a huge asshole. And, on a fundamental level, new fans are basically good.
