If you don't drive them out, then sooner or later they'll turn around and work to drive you out. See current Bond fandom for examples of that, and Star Trek Discovery too. The BNFs loathe that there are older fans in the fandom and actively seek to drive them out. Or just look at how FS has systematically purged everyone who liked the livejournal days too. I wish we had done more gatekeeping back then.

I think a little bit of gatekeeping can be beneficial, but unfortunately I do not think there is any way to implement a little bit of gatekeeping that does not involve being a huge asshole. And, on a fundamental level, new fans are basically good.

I don’t think of fan communities as unified enough to bother keeping someone out of “the fandom.” You can kick someone out of your tabletop game if they’re disruptive, but they’ll probably join another game somewhere else, and that’s okay. (Well, not okay for the people whose game they disrupt next, but you get the idea.)

I don't want to talk to so-called fans that just jumped on a sexy geek ethtetic bandwagon. They don't know anything about lore, they don't ship, they're anti slash. All they do is consume media, wear fandom merch, post geeky things and parake in all and every drama, talking about how THEY're pure and righteous.

Don't read fics? Get out of fandom places, you're not a fan.

There are only three groups I'm cool with gatekeeping: the gatekeepers who want to control the fandom and insist that their opinions are objective fact and agreed on by everyone, the racist/sexist assholes who think the mere existence of competent women and minorities in media is pandering and ruining modern media, and the people who send hate to the creators/actors/writers/etc.

I'm not a fan of gatekeeping but I'm also not a fan of entitled newcomers who barge into existing communities and constantly ask the same questions everyone's asked 100 times or reposting the same shit that's been posted 100 times or smashing their culturally/racially/etc oblivious viewpoint on everything usually while assuming everyone else is also a white American, and basically not having the social awareness to lurk and see how things work for a while before spamming everyone with their shit.

They can go ahead and call themselves fans, idgaf, but not every behavior by those people is welcome or acceptable in every space and lots of them don't bother to even check what the norms and manners are in communities they join. That's the part where idgaf if people kick them out

I'd never stop anyone from being/calling themselves a fan, but I might avoid them myself. Not gatekeeping fandom, just my tiny corner of it. People are entitled to their own ways of being a fan, their own opinions, but I don't have to listen to them.

Gatekeeping reminds me of my school days' cliques. Hated those. Those people actively harmed my mental health so... I hate gatekeeping. I hate the very idea of gatekeeping with burning passion.
If I am a fan of the thing, I am exactly as much a fan of the thing as everyone else that likes the thing to the point of believing themselves a fan. Some fans are horrible people. Some people are horrible people. What can I say?

I don't get harshing anyone's buzz, like Fandom is fun, just let people have their fun. Who cares if a question got asked for the hundredth time? Just skip over it of it bothers you that much.

On the other hand, if people are acting a fool, it's okay to tell them to stop, or tell them to read the rules/lurk a little more before interacting.

I'll admit I've become a bit gatekeepery. One of my most beloved series got a big adaptation in recent years and I absolutely loathe it. It's brought in a lot of new fans who only know the adaptation though, which I'm a bit bitter about. All the new fanwork is centered on these strange horrible takes on the characters and lore. It also made a NOTP of mine very popular. I try to not be so judgy, but gosh is it hard! :0(

If that's the one where Tim Curry voices the evil pipe organ and Bernadette Peters voices the angel tree ornament, then I watched this movie approximately five million times when I was a kid. I obviously liked it back then, but I haven't watched it in decades and haven't exactly gone looking for it. XD
