I agree. I think gatekeeping is what drives me away from fandom.
I don't stick to many fandoms nor do I delve in deep. I usually hang around and consume whatever I like, don't really make strong connections. I tend to be one of those random users who drops by with compliments or squees and I leave.
Because in most places I usually come across hard-core gatekeepers. They either are antagonistic or belittling. I just want to talk to people about the thing I liked, not be someone's minion who nods to their every opinion in the fandom or make a long list of why I'm a legit fan and not just a fair-weather fan or whatever the fuck. Learned I can live with the little instant gratification of short interactions with strangers though it's lonely sometimes since I don't have any deeper connections.
