people using the tagging system badly is also the number 1 annoyance i have with the tagging system, but i wouldn't really know how to solve it

Maybe a tier system? You get maybe 2 or 3 slots for the characters the fic is actually about, and then you can add however many you want for characters the fic features. You could do the same for ships, tropes... It's probably difficult to do technically and/or easy for people to get wrong.

it's difficult to do technically + there's a problem of what you do with existing fics + AO3's technical capacity is apparently severely limited for reasons

that'd be super cool, but ao3 updates take forever and a day so I'll probably be 90 years old and gumming my food by the time that happens

People were begging for primary/secondary character and ship tags a decade ago and in response got AO3 saying it was too hard for them to program.

Same. Some fandoms have no tag consistency at all or people just describe their fics in tags for some reason? Or don't understand that you can have general tags + fandom tags.
(Especially bad in smut fic holy shit. I want to filter some things in and out but if you use tags no one but you uses :/ )
