Sadly, depending on fandom, they're not well-used.

Two of my fandoms have asshole writers who tag every single ship and character even when not present in an attempt to have the fic show up in every god damn search.

Gets right on my tits.

Yep. Some of my fandoms are great about tagging things accurately. Others... do exactly what you just said, or think that if a character shows up for one line that's worthy of tagging the fic with that character's name, which frustrates those of us who are actually trying to look for stories featuring that character.

Ah, see that kind of writer ends up with their User ID in my Hide Annoying Authors skin. (Which is a godsend, it really, really is.)

That's a reportable rule-break. Might take them forever to get to it because there's worse harassment taking priority, but it's helpful to the team to have this flagged.
