Them remaking that show with that actor is actually kinda offensive to me. Bleh.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-24 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Dislike, I get. But how is it offensive?

ayrt

That Quinto is being treated as some sort of shitty water-downed replacement for all things Nimoy. It's like very irrational and bitter I know, but that was my total kneejerk reaction to seeing the secret.

People don't have as many good voices any more. I don't mean in terms of voice acting, I mean, voices that are just resonant, and that sound interesting to the point where the phrasing of even very normal sentences sounds fascinating and mysterious

Thats actually very true. It's actually kinda strange how rare those deep baritone and soft melodic type voices are now, or rather how people don't consider them when casting narrative type roles. Maybe the death of radio has something to do with it? I legit can't think of anyone with that kinda voice who isn't 60+ years of age off hand.

Yeah, I really don't know what it is. I wonder if it's maybe because people smoke cigarettes much less now.

Acting in general has gone for a narrower look and sound lately. There simply is not the breadth of character parts available to encourage those outwith the mainstream to stick with the industry in any numbers. It is the shallowing of the pool of talent, chasing that inoffensive mediocrity.

They're probably all stage actors now, which is where many of the older actors you're referencing got their training or start.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-27 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Actors were trained to sound a certain way, if they could manage that.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's specific theatrical training! But people 60+ doing the narrating isn't in any way new, it's a great job for an older, established actor.

The interesting thing about age is, Zach Quinto was 41 when he started doing In Search Of; Nimoy was 46. So they were actually more or less the same age.

All this is quite new to me; I hadn't realised voice acting was as subject to fashions and,I suppose, waves of competence\lesser competence as any other. I guess I should have done! So thank-you for the discussion.
