Strong Female Character syndrome, innit. Interesting characters tend to be hot messes, but writers don't want to write a hot mess of a leading female character.

IDK I think there's just a lot of bad character writing out there, and it's especially prominent in YA-type media for various reasons (which both The 100 and Twilight are examples of).

I haven't watched any of the new Trek series so I can't comment on that, but in general, I don't think it goes that deep.

The thing is, most of the time there are more male characters. Which means you can have variety. When you only have a couple main female characters, you are more limited. We just need to start seeing more media where half or more of the main characters are female, and then maybe writers will be more comfortable writing a variety of women, including ones that are hot messes.

I think you're onto something, but I think Michael's journey starts out incredibly messy...

Her backstory is messy, but the character never was. You can add anything into a backstory, whether you should is another matter, but how the main story delivers on it is what counts and the show never delivered.
