People deem female characters who exist as anything other than figuratively/literally sucking the male characters' dicks as buzzkill harpies worse than mass murderers, so it's hardly any wonder when creators keep them safe and bland. Look at any discussion about a show, if there are female characters, most of the comments are about how they deserve to be tortured to death for the crime of stealing attention from the (usually, equally as boring but in a ship) male characters.
