I feel like the majority of people writing for film media just aren't very good at writing interiority when it comes to female characters--usually because they're male and really bad at not objectifying women on a fundamental level, but in some cases they're female and just not particularly great writers. But establishing a strong sense of interiority for a character is so, so important if you want them to be compelling on anything deeper than a surface level.

And so you end up with lead characters who are hollow like cheap Easter chocolate: a bunch of obvious, recognizable stuff on the outside, but the internal stuff--the messy, complicated workings of their inner selves--is just a blank.

That's not so say there isn't an increasing number of excellent female characters out there, because there absolutely is. It's just that there's also still a lot of female characters who were very clearly written by someone who sat down with the agenda of writing a Female Character and not a person.
