Those don't sound like terrible ideas to me. Of course it all depends on how they were written. Stories about terrible people and hopeless situations can still be engaging as long as there is something the reader can connect with. If the stories make clear the characters' feelings and motivations and don't just focus on the graphic details of the horribleness I could see them being quite captivating.
