Ah, I love Delgado's Master. And a poop to the Master needing a redemption arc. I applaud your taste, OP.

Three/Delgado FTW.

Three/Delgado was definitely great for that ‘I will fight to save you from a monster I unleashed’, ‘I will cradle you through the injuries I inflicted’, ‘no one can kill you except me’, ‘I will walk beside you into death but every time you will wake to my betrayal’ sort of vibe (Mind of Evil is an excellent first episode to watch with them, doesn’t make an impression at all, no sir). Seven/Ainley has a little bit of the same vibe, enhanced a little by the fact that by now they both have successfully killed each other and more or less worked through it. They’re more equal in their threat to each other now that the Master knows that the Doctor, no matter how moral he might be, absolutely will burn him to death if pushed to it. But Three/Delgado does have more of that bittersweet almost-partnership leavened by certain betrayal. They were both so close in time to when they actually were friends in those incarnations, and at the same time the Master’s betrayal of the Doctor’s morals was equally fresh. They had such a good dynamic during Three’s era. Delgado’s Master feels the most overtly almost-honourable, the urbane villain clearly reading from the Bond handbook, but his betrayals are always colder and more certain than some of his hammier later incarnations. And yet, he will still fight his way to a machine he turned on to turn it off before it can kill his old friend, and cradle said old friend’s head in his hands while making sure he’s still alive.

All of which is to say, absolutely, I also deeply love a bittersweet enemies-with-benefits dynamic, lost friendship, echoes of old partnership, gentle touches sweetly tainted by the knowledge of coming betrayal yet again. It’s an excellent Doctor/Master dynamic.

Not OP, but sounds like they’re talking about The Mind of Evil (season eight, serial two).

Thanks, anon! I must've missed that one bc how could anyone forget that?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
OP here, 100% Mind of Evil. It's such a great serial. It wouldn't be surprising if you'd missed it, though, because apparently it was almost lost, and I think the only full copy that survived was a black & white master reel. It sticks in my memory at least partly because it was a Three serial that was in black and white when I saw it.

The other reason is sticks in my memory is the above, because that was such a fascinating little scene.

I think Three/Delgado Master was one of my very first ships, before I knew what ships were!
