If they wanna sell movies in China, that is true. When it comes to movies that they are not selling in China, then it becomes more questionable. For the biggest of the big blockbusters, the ones where the studios think they need China (and a bunch of other homophobic shitholes), then they can't. Whether they should or should not be making those sort of movies is another question.

The Chinese market is one reason for them not to include gay content in movies, but it's not the only possible reason. It's probably not the case that Hollywood studios would be banging down the doors to include tons of gay content in everything were it not for China.

given the kerfluffle over Lightyear in the Middle East, "China" is just the recent trendy shorthand for "all those countries with some kind of moral law that leads them to ban western movies for being too gay." To be fair, China has actually banned media from the west, but they're not the only one who has. It's just really easy to hate fascists, especially if they've recently been forcing their own people to self-censor their own books and comics.

censorship is censorship no matter who does it and why; Lightyear was sort of a moment of positive for Disney being willing to say "oh, you don't want to show our movie? well, fuck it, I don't care." Time will tell if they continue to do so instead of using this one moment for kudos because they could afford to go on without Yemen's audience.

People also focus on China because it's big and has a huge population, so equals a lot of revenue.

My overall feeling on this is just fuck Disney, at this point.
