Amen to all of this

Curious as to whether you hate him simply for being a realistic depiction of a dumb clueless self-centred teenage boy or something deeper?

Like, I can get that that stuff is annoying when you're watching something and are no longer in that age group because you're now aware enough to be going, "Oh god we really did act like that." and getting embarrassed.

But he didn't really (imo) do anything inherently wrong besides be age-typically tone deaf about girls, especially for El who unfortunately centres her whole life around a handful of people because that's all she has.

"who unfortunately centres her whole life around a handful of people because that's all she has."

... isn't that what all the kids are doing, though? Most of the adult characters are also not shown to have much in the way of friendship/family networks.

I feel like it's a little different with El (at least in the way I've noticed) because she doesn't have any sort of solid family (absentee or 'casual' or not) to compare to as well as any of the others have or had.

Like Mike has Nancy and his parents and Jonathan and Will have each other and their mom.

El had Hopper for a bit but then 'lost' him, and that short time was also not exactly cosy family life because Hopper was struggling to be a parent after all this time, especially with a kid who didn't understand family dynamics.

Why would it need to be anything deeper? For the record, I was never a teenage boy. I don't view my teenage years as being much like Mike's in general. There were embarrassing moments, but not ones that came from being emotionally clueless and inconsiderate to my friends.

also just because something is realistic also doesn't mean it makes for good storytelling. like how gritty "realistic" shows love to put soooo much rape in their stories but it's unpleasant to watch and doesn't add anything. annoying characters, even if they're realistic, can be unpleasant to watch and not add anything

El hasn't been taught anything like that because it's a TV show and she's a character. If the show presents her as being with Mike because she likes him, then it's because she really does like him, not because she's putting up with a guy she considers mediocre.

I dislike Mike too and think both El and Will are idiots for liking him. They all deserve each other.

I'm not sure I understand your argument. She's a fictional character, so she's not going to have any nuances to her personality as though she's real and we should take everything at face value? That... doesn't seem very logical. For that matter, it's entirely possible to like someone AND remain with them because they're mediocre. I'm not sure you realize that IRL, those two things are directly connected and that's part of the problem.

Ehhh, I think OP's point re: "women are taught..." is about the audience watching this romance play out. We see this extraordinary female character in love with a male character who is portrayed just doing the bare minimum.

I liked Mike in S1, and I liked Mike/Eleven in S1. But my fondness for both Mike and Mike/Eleven waned pretty heavily in S2, and completely in S3. Haven't seen S4 yet. IDK if I want to bother.

I just finished it and... eh, it was okay, I guess. I don't hate the show, but I'm not a huge fan by any means. It's just annoying to see Mike being annoying again.

Is Stranger Things still a show about supernatural goings-on, or is it just another drama now? I hear a lot about it but I never hear anything about any supernatural elements whatsoever, it's all the characters and their relationships.

Sorry, I meant to put this comment in the main thread for the secret.

There's still a lot of supernatural goings-on, they even get talked about some - I see plenty of stuff about Vecna and his whole thing

IA with the "too many women are taught to put up with mediocre men" part of this secret.

Mileven is such a dead, unfeeling combo. I do not feel their love at all. It seems so underwhelming.
