(Anonymous) 2022-08-02 03:38 am (UTC)(link)marvel can *write* good characters, but it doesn't care about them, and I'd prefer not to care if they're just going to keep sacrificing arcs for infinite money continuity combos, which they have no reason not to do

(Anonymous) 2022-08-02 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)I feel like a big part of the problem is that the caring basically ends up falling through the cracks over time. I think the writers who are responsible for writing many of these successful characters care, but there are just so many cooks in the kitchen, and often different people writing each installment, so they may care, but it's a fragmentary sort of caring that inevitably gets watered down with endless strategic and practical considerations.
The audience's natural impulse (and desire) is to care more over time. Like, caring about a character in the beginning is important, but ideally you care more about them as the story progresses, not less. Whereas, due largely to the nature of how MCU movies are generated, whatever caring the writers begin with tends to get lost to attrition over time. Not ideal.
