I think they had Zuko and Katara fight together because their friendship/alliance is thematically important to the show, and because they wanted Aang to fight the Fire Lord alone. Personally, I'm not a big fan of this, but I think they had it planned that way from the beginning, not out of some kind of shipper-motivated indulgence.

That said: my personal wish would have been for Mai and Ty Lee more involved (maybe to help Sokka, Toph and Suki with the air ships?) but you know -- the finale was pretty rad regardless, and the second half of a season three as a whole honestly made my entire year <3

She was still pretty useless in the battle against Azula. Zuko had her in his hand when he sacrificed himself to rescue her from something she shouldn't have been rescued in the first place.

I get what they were doing -- the idea that Zuko wanted to fight his sister alone, proving to himself and anyone watching that he was, in fact, equal to her. But uh...yeah. It would have been nice if Katara had had something to do other than first aid and last-minute Azula-pwning :|

Not just that Zuko was Azula's equal, but also proving beyond a reasonable doubt that he won his throne fair and square. Isn't that was Iroh said he'd have to do to take back the throne by facing Azula?

The one thing I wanted in the finale, beyond any shipping or any defeatan' the Fire Lord, was for Mai and Ty Lee to have a central role in the show at last. That was the one thing that was missing. Either in taking down Azula or helping the Sukkoph trio, I don't know, but they should have done something dammit.
