Zuko's sacrifice had his character come full circle. It started when he became the banished prince after he was burned for sticking up for his people, it then ended with another burn, gotten from once again, trying to protect someone.

Katara fully accepted Zuko and fought to protect him from Azula. It wasn't her fault that Azula took a cheap shot at her.

She was more useful with Zuko than she would have been with Aang. What could she have done against the Firelord? Nothing. Defeating Ozai was something he had to do on his own. Honestly, I'm guessing the only reason you're whining is because you missed out on some Kataang moment. Character development>shipping.

I wanted Katara to fight her own final boss, not to be used to gimp Zuko and then lazily defeat a gimped Azula. She wasn't useful, she was used as a plot device.
