I'm not sure what you think I meant by "selling." What I meant was over-hyped. Created expectations that were left unsatisfied. And yes, I think fans do this ALL THE TIME.

Deception, the idea of receiving personal gain by representing something as other than it is. First, because there's no deception, second, because the personal gain would be yours primarily, if you did end up liking whatever was "sold" to you. The filmmakers or book publishers profit second, and then those pesky overselling fans come last. Or hell, you could pirate whatever related materials you want and then you wouldn't be paying anything, but the fans supposedly selling to you would be happy enough if you came and joined their squee afterwards.

Fans haven't been selling Watchmen or any of its characters as "intellectual", "nihilistic", or any of your other descriptors, because the fans are the ones who are familiar with the source material and they realize that those descriptions are not only silly and flippant, they're also just inaccurate. See my post below about how your term for Rorschach is less correct than its exact opposite -- that's pretty much the height of meaninglessness for a descriptive term.

What fans have been doing is enjoying their fandom and expressing their enjoyment noisily because the movie's just come out and it's a great opportunity for a fandom reboot. Sure, we've all been saying, "We love this, check it out!" None of us have been saying, "Oh you must read this, it's soooo inter-lectuarl, lololol." Stuffy critics might say that; fans on the interwebs who read things like Fandom Secrets are much more aware of people's ability to draw their own conclusions about creative works.

Apart from the failures of accuracy in your secret, I also take issue with the whole attitude of bitterness towards an unliked fandom. GUESS HOW MANY FANDOMS, PAIRINGS, AND CHARACTERS I DON'T LIKE?! Even though their fans are always going on and on about how great they are! Shall I inform you, with pictures and snappy catchphrases, of every single one of them? No, because I'm not an arrogant twerp and I realize that not personally enjoying something is no grounds to deliberately needle its fans.
