I think a lot of people go into LOTR expecting a quick-moving fun adventure novel, and are alienated and put off when they discover LOTR is not really that. And the Bombadil material is by far the biggest and most glaring example of that. So it's a sort of sacrificial offering to those people.

I blame the films for that. It's the very antithesis of a fun quick-moving adventure novel. Not that I don't enjoy those as well, but...

I don't think it's entirely the fault of the movies - it would be easy to get the same impression if you're going from, like, Dungeons & Dragons, or modern epic fantasy novels, or whatever.

But yes, the movies definitely didn't help.
