The TV Tropes page seems a bit sparse.

(not OP)

It mostly appears in art, plays, ballets, and some novels.

Here's an interesting blog article https://lawfulevilnovelist.wordpress.com/2017/01/17/on-fictional-tropes-death-and-the-maiden/

Not OP, but I really like Katherine Arden's Winternight trilogy, which I think fits with this theme because the frost demon in it also has the role of Death.

Also not OP, but Keturah And Lord Death by Martine Leavitt would fit this theme

I've read that, it's a beautifully written story!

I also ask because uh, I like grim reapers and I like them when they're sexually appealing. So um.... recs are good. ;D

You can find all kinds of sexy grim reaper fic if you look in the right tags on Terry Pratchett fan fiction...

I never read his novels. Should I in order to get a feel for his Death?

Re: Any favorite examples, OP?

You could probably get a good idea of his character just by looking at official art and fanart. Discworld's DEATH is not a 'bad guy' he's just terribly good at his job. Reaper Man would be the novel to read if you wanted more.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind.

Some recs (not OP)

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Couple of book recs:

The Company of Death by Elisa Hansen.

I think The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N. K. Jemisin also has parallels.

Not a visual, but The Imagined Village did a great version of the folk song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YiaOqHDUsE

Death and the maiden rules, great taste OP

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a big trope in 19th century art. I'm sitting trying to think of examples from TV or movies, but I guess any deathly, skeletal figure, or figure who represents death, being shipped with a beautiful young woman, could count.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-10 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'll mention that moment in The Tree of Life, where the young woman gets with the man (personifying death and decay etc) who at first glance looks very attractive (since he's all blurred) but then when the camera sharpens/focus, you see him for what he is.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the image you've used here OP!

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Any recs? I like this too but I can't think of many examples besides the Elizabeth musical.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Thoughts on Tomes has a video ranking Hades and Persephone retellings, that might be helpful because it's the same dynamics, Lord of Death kidnapping a maiden.

Thanks for sharing!!! Excited to write down a reading list!

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got a question. You're now more drawn to the role of Death because you're getting older, or because you've started wanting to murder maidens?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-10 03:15 am (UTC)(link)

Oh, look, a new favorite trope. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, OP!
