I *think* it's because nobody knows if they're a boy or a girl. I've watched the first 11 episodes and I could never figure it out...(although it might've been revealed since then, I don't know)

121. Me too, well I didn't get far enough to see Chrona.

I wanted to see Excallibur but I disliked the first chapters so much I gave up .__. It was a bunch of kids running around killing people 'to get powerful' or whatever and it seemed really, how to say, weird morally. The death and killing was so casual.

Hey, me too! I personally could never get into SE the way that some of my friends seem to be able to, but damn if I don't love cute, sad Crona. I never learned about the gender ambiguity aspect until long after I had dropped the series either, since the translation I was reading just went with "she".

I'm hoping Maka will save Chrona in an epic fashion, and give Medusa a royal beatdown(I cant stand Medusa). That'd make me happy :)

It was never supposed to be deep anyway, just like the rest that comes out from shounen mags. I don't love it, but I thought the anime was enjoyable in a stupid fun sort of way; the animation and style (and Maka - yay for having a lead female character in a shounen fighting series!) probably had a lot to do with that.
